Even if Getting the Shot is Tough, just Give us a Big Smile!

Yes, another addition to my painted Electrical Substation series.

These city gray rectangular lumps have been transformed by artists employed by Gemeente Den Haag (The Hague City Council).

I’m delighted to keep finding new ones and to promote them a little further than the neighbourhoods they stand in.

After all, if they brighten up my day, then maybe they will brighten up yours too.

This one stands on the  intersection of the Thomsonlaan and Valkenboskade (on the side closest to Goudenregenstraat).

The city council never removes ivy or plants already growing on the side of these, so this substation has one of the larger sides covered and part of one of the small sides too.  Just like the artists, I will have to work around that.

My job was made harder by the fact that there is a parking area in the middle of the street and every time I’ve tried to photograph it, there have been cars parked up very close to the substation. I did my best.

    • Thanks! I’m really liking the painted up substations, street artists are often very talented and I wish people gave them more credit for their work.

  2. Hi.

Yes, You succeeded very well. Art, as I have said it many times, is the thing that I love in its many forms. Today You saw different art in my post. Most of all I liked the first one. I made me smiling! I really loved this post. Thank You.

Happy weekend to You and Your family!

    • Yes this makes me smile every time I see it too.. as do many of the other substations that have gotten a decorative make-over. These artists are talented aren’t they!

  3. We have a lot of those here in Auckland as well but not as big as those, I guess its only the street tranformers and phone line switches

    • I have no clue exactly what the innards of these contains… something high voltage for sure, and I think they service far more houses in a street than a Kiwi one would (the Dutch have a space problem so they pack ‘em in) For years they have been a shade of regulation-dull-and-boring-institutional-grey so hey, any paint hob on them is an improvement!

  4. Yay, another painted station! :-)

This one is a hoot! How can you NOT smile seeing that goofy grin?

Do you know if the text is the artist’s signature or did someone tag it afterwards? (which would be a shame…artwork is artwork IMHO and should not be desecrated!)

    • I’m sure it is the artists signature.. I’ll have to double check some of the other painted boxes as this style looks the same on several, so yes I think it is the artists “tag”.
That grin brightens my day every time we drive past it :)
