Kiss my Shiny Metal…

Yep, have to confess that I was handed the title of this post… rather literally, on a box.

An electrical substation box to be precise and this one just made me laugh. It’s an excellent combination of whimsy, rebellion, innuendo, colour and fun.

If  you are new to the posts in this series, then these are Electrical substations around the Den Haag (The Hague) where the Geemente (City Council) have commissioned local artists to decorate them.  I love them because they brighten up the city streets and bring a smile to my face,  so last summer made it a mission to go on long walks and take photos of as many of them as possible.

The girl in the red dress reminds me of the character “Annie” … but was there a red dog in that movie anywhere? I struggle to remember one.

The sweet looking mole is a touch that Mrs Invisible  (Invisible Mikey’s wife) might appreciate after their recent run-in with these rodents who are sweet looking, but sadly decimated their newly paved back garden. http://invisiblemikey.wordpress.com/2011/07/29/service-projects/

Personally I’ve never seen a mole, but if one appeared out of the ground sporting a blue hat like this one, it would be hard to be angry wouldn’t it?  That said, I also don’t have a garden, which probably goes a very long way to explain why I think these little creatures are rather charming.

I took these photos last summer, but this is a substation that I don’t pass very frequently so I think from memory that it’s located on the Regentesseaan, close to the Loosduinseweg.

  1. Indeed, the girl is “Little Orphan Annie”. That’s the way she looked in the newspaper cartoons, including the eyes with no pupils – and the dog. The robot is Bender, from the show Futurama, by Matt Groening, the guy who does The Simpsons. The cool cat is Fritz the Cat, originally an underground comic for adults from the 1970s. I don’t recognize the green squirter. (Is that spray paint, mayonnaise, or shaving cream?)

There – I’ve done my good geek deed for the day.

  2. Mikey,
You can’t believe how impressed I am!!! I *thought* that the girl might have been Annie but the others? I’m totally cluless LOL
Ah ha! NOW I see the “kiss my” connection, but to be honest I’ve never seen any of the programmes or comics these are in , not even the Annie one. (Friends of ours in Maine had the Annie video though so I saw her there on one of the few days it rained all day)
How COOL to know who the others are!
Hmm maybe another reader can help with the spray can chap?

  3. These are really so lovely! I do love them.

BTW, I will return after three weeks on Friday. My wife started her holiday and next Monday we are going to the North beyond the Arctic Circle by our car. The trip is planned to last from 10 to 12 days.

    Happy week-end!

  4. Ha! So someone out there is a ‘Bender’ fan! That show is great and looks good on the sub-station!

Invisible Mikey is correct on all counts. Yeah, that green dude is a mystery to me too…
