Welcome to my retrospective journal as I detail our travels in New Zealand at the beginning of this year.
At this point of our trip we have left the stormy weather of the North Island behind and are heading south in the South Island along State Highway One.
We’ve been reminded by and Aunt and Uncle of a brilliant eatery that’s somewhere on the main street by the waterfront, and we are walking around trying to find it.
This place is the fabulously named “Pot Belly Bakery Cafe” and whilst it’s not actually the place we are looking for, it has us stopped in our tracks as we investigate the amazing mural painted into the side of it.
It’s a little bit of a pity that there are shade umbrellas intruding into the image but you can at least get an idea.
The water is so well painted that it really feels like you can feel the cool water of the sea… but as for getting this close to a whale in real life… we can all only dream.

That wall painting is amazing!

Tilly,
the mural painting is amazing… it was a hot day and the water looked cool and inviting (ok even if you shared with whales LOL!)
It goes to show that there are some seriously talented artists around, and what a fabulous idea to showcase their work grand scale like this

I’m just astonished at how much public art you discovered on your journey. New Zealand seems to be a thriving place for artists!

Luddy, I noticed that there were even more murals this trip than our previous trip two years earlier… maybe it had something to do with New Zealand hosting the Rugby World Cup last September?
Also I think that when walls are really well painted by talented artists it gives people pride in their local spaces and I see that there seems to be a lot less graffiti scrawled around in places where there are a lot of murals: giving people an outlet?
Who knows? but either way it’s a privilege to document and “advertise” it all

Aaaah, you might have something there regarding local pride. I know there are some wonderful murals in Los Angeles — a city notorious for graffiti, yet the murals are left alone.

Luddy,
I vote that all blank walls everywhere must have a stunning mural on them by law…plenty of work for artists, far less garffiti and lots more smiling public.. do you second that?
