You know I love quirky stuff… I loved these letterboxes that we saw on the road between Wimbleton and Porangahau on Provincial State Highway 62…. Eclectic is the perfect word!

Rope me in some post Cowboy!
Just on the Christchurch to Hanmer Road, when you pass though the small town of Culverden, you will find a farm on the outskirts of town that sports an excellent letterbox.
Here’s a wonderful example of some brilliant whimsy and creativity….
View down the road…
Here comes the postman… Yeeeeeee haaaaa !!!

Like I promised you… …it’s in the mail.
When we travelled though the United States last year I took photos of several things that seemed very ordinary indeed to some of readers who live in the USA.
You comments showed me that you thought it rather humorous that I should be so fascinated with such simple every-day things like yellow buses or mailboxes.
For me, these things are some of the little icons of America that you see in movies, or in books and they look so different to the buses and mailboxes I’m used to, that yep, guilty, I stop and stare.
I promised you a while back that I would show you what our mail collection boxes look like… so as promised, here is the photo of one of ours to show you why I think your mailboxes are quaint and have character.
Ours are modern and have no soul. There are two slots, like unseeing eyes, one for post going to the local city and immediate surrounding area and the other for post going to all other destinations.
At New Year, don’t bother to try and post a letter, all the boxes get sealed up in an effort to defeat the nationwide sport of teenagers who have a long a dedicated history of blowing them up with firecrackers. Year before last the kids waited until the day after New Year, and the previous occupant of this spot got itself expanded into at least four very artistic, albeit rather ruthlessly jagged pieces.
Senseless of course and I usually don’t like vandalism at all, but that said, I’ll have to admit that it was rather impressive to behold. PTT came and disposed of the pitiful carcase very swiftly and I think that this year the regular presence of the local constabulary has helped this one to reach it’s second birthday without adding to the letterbox mortality rate.
Now that promise is fulfilled. Ta Da! Drum Roll…Can I have a cheque please? … oh what? I might have guessed.
Naturally… ….”It’s in the mail“.
