Tokatoka, Taking a Peak Around…

(photograph © Kiwidutch)

You are peaking peeking into the pages of Kiwidutch’s retrospective journal as I document our December 2011-Janurayy 2012 trip to New Zealand.

At the moment we are staying with one of my oldest friends in Northland (at the very top of the North Island) and whilst my friend attends to some things that need her attention at home, we are taking her girls on a day trip around the region.

The kids voted to walk up Tokatoka peak so here we are at this odd looking hill on a baking hot day in January.

Naturally it’s not a track I could even remotely think of navigating  on crutches so I got to stay by the car whilst Himself and the kids scrambled to the top.

“Scramble” is definitely the operative word here because  although it’s hot and dry here  today, it’s been bucketing down rain in recent days and this track already has a reputation for being slippery. It’s very quiet out here in the countryside so quite soon after they left the van and disappeared into the trees and scrub I could hear squeals, shrieks and laughter for quite a long time after they departed and then all repeated again as they got closer when returning. When they finially re-emerged from the vegetation I saw the reason… every kid bottom was caked in mud.

Apparently some parts of the track are so steep that the kids steadied themselves with their hands and picked their way down on their bottoms to avoid even more slipping and sliding, so back at the van I got  a series of  lovely photos for the two family’s albums that consisted of  back-shots of a row of kids of various heights sporting wonderfully muddy backsides (clothes).

Naturally I’m not posting photos of my own children here or those of my friend on the Internet so you’ll just have to imagine  how funny they all looked, as well as the strange boasting that  ensued around the idea of : “ I got dirtier! ”  and “ No!!! I got more mud than you ”  or “ ha ha …(name) is even dirtier than you are!“.

I  had some time of my hands whilst they “conquered” the track a so I carefully picked my way a few meters down the road in both directions and let the zoom lens on my camera do the rest as I took photographs in a wide circle around me.

Typical small shingle (gravel) road, often labelled on maps as “not tar sealed”,  both an unfamiliar term and a type of road that’s caught out more than a few unsuspecting tourists who have no clue how to drive on gravel.

In this next photo a look at the Peak from slightly different angle that better shows the “point” that sticks out to the front at the top…

Whoa! Where did he come from!?? I was distracted by the shrieks and laughter on the hill so I startled when all of a sudden I realised I was being watched from  very close range…seems someone is curious as to my presence…

An Unexpected Wilderness…

Just a simple photographic post today…

Himself and I managed a weekend in the German town of Kleve a few years ago and when we went for a late afternoon walk around the central part of town which also included the large hill there the castle stands.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that on the back side of the hill, there was a large forest like area with a river running though it.

I love it when I go somewhere and discover some unexpected wilderness where I expected to have only found suburbs.

This place is surely a wonderful asset, and even though it’s March,  the days are short and cold, we still saw people jogging and walking here.

I can imagine it would be a great place for a picnic and forest walks  in summer and best of all…

…it’s just  literally minutes from the town centre.

Getting “fitted up” by WordPress to the tune of 5 K(m)

About ten days ago, Himself  volunteered for the WordPress  5 Kilometer Run, otherwise known as the “Worldwide WP 5k”.

Actually he didn’t know he was volunteering at the time, as I was kind enough to put his name forward without his immediate knowledge. And no, I’m not going to join in with breaking a sweat,  he gets to do all the hard work all by himself.

Rude of me? Probably.

Practical?  Absolutely.

Ok time to fill in the gaps. being still a little bit broken, I’m on crutches and couldn’t manage 500 meters let alone 5 kilometers at the moment and Himself has in the last year taken up running and is as keen as mustard to build up his fitness, distance and personal best times.

He entered the Hague’s City-Pier-City race a few weeks ago and was delighted to complete 10 kms in a respectable first-timer-time of a fraction over an hour and now he’s spurred on to keep going.

I knew he wouldn’t mind me signing him up to represent me on the WordPress Run because like me,  he has a Local Heart, Global Soul,  he’s a geography freak who loves the idea of seeing just how global this could go, and because his one and only complaint was entirely predictable.

“Complaint?” … yes you heard right, he complained.

I mean all I did was to tell him I’ve signed him up for a 5km run on Sunday the 10th of April

….there’s a slight pause… he looks at me funny and frowns…

…” only 5kms? am I allowed to do more?”

Yes schatje you more is also fine

(“schatje” in Dutch doesn’t have single word translation into english, it’s an affectionate term that means “honey, sweetie, dearest, love”).

And with a grin schatje is happy.

…and that’s how Himself Kiwidutch comes to be pounding the pathways of The Hague today as a member of what might possibly be the largest and newest running club in the world.

So.. lets spy on the route… Himself likes variety, but he has two favourite things to incorporate into his runs.

First… little side streets instead of large thoroughfares…

Secondly a workout through the multitude of pathways that run through the dunes if the run is a long one.

Generally he picks the route on the day because the weather plays a part too. He likes the beach too. but on very windy days blowing sand isn’t fun.

So things we know so far about todays WordPress Run?

Himself will run 10-15 kms, it’s highly likely that some of it will be through the dunes of Den Haag (the Hague), and possibly also around the Haven (harbour) .

Should he ever have the misfortune to fall into a canal, he can use his Size 47 running shoes as lifeboats (I’m not joking here… his shoes are enormous!)

So that’s our story for “wwp5k” …

Himself is getting fit and I am doing my physio exercises on the bed, Little Mr and Kiwi Daughter offer their lungs as the noisy cheer-leading team, and I am the official time keeper, manager and keeper of the Start and Finish posts (which happen to be one and the same, namely our front door)

So, to everyone running or walking today around the WordPress World… good luck with your 5 kms (or longer)… and here’s to fitness!
