Pardon, Paarden Me !!!

Suddenly, to my surprise I find I’m not alone on this little gravel road at the back of Tokatoka Peak.

Two horses have appeared from behind some bushes in the paddock next to the road and decided to come and check me out.

I talk to them for a moment and then go to move  little further down the road to take a photograph of the surrounding countryside. Imagine my surprise when they both proceed to move directly into the frame of the photo I’m trying to take.

One of them is really persistent and every time I move he does too… Now several theories abound.  A) he likes the company and doesn’t want me to leave him. B) He’s a wannabe celebrity and wants his 15 minutes of fame. C) He’s a practical joker at heart and he’s having a laugh by imitating those people who jump into the background of other people’s photographs pulling stupid faces or making rabbit ears behind their heads with their fingers.

He’s definitely a character, he has a twinkle in his eye and he even looks like he’s teasing me by threatening  to eat one of the fence posts.

The word for “horse” in Dutch is “paard” and plural, Horses, is “paarden”… so it’s probably  little wonder that I found myself laughing at his antics and saying  “Paarden!  Pardon me!”  every time he stuck his nose into my photographic shots.

  1. The last photo of him eating the fence post is particularly amusing.

    • I know… It was so teasingly done too!
It was such a performance that I thought he definitely deserved his own blog post.

Hey horse! You are (well, at least a tiny bit) famous!!!

  2. What a comedian. I bet he’s the toast of all the horse clubs…
    Beautiful shots!

    • I know! …probably he’s station hack and doesn’t mingle in horse club circles, but who knows? You could also be right. Either way it’s really clear that his personality sports a very dry wit that even we humans can appreciate.
He deserves his 15 minutes of fame don’t you think?

  3. Awwwww, he LIKES you!!! I think animals can sense kind-hearted souls. He was drawn to you and gave you an interesting story to tell. Win-win for both of you!

    • He’s a joker isn’t he!!!
Truth be told I had my fill of horsey stuff in my childhood and experienced more than my fair share of bucking, stamping and biting (mostly due to one very grumpy equine individual called “Cinders”) who’s antics even saw me thrown off onto a barbed wire fence on one occasion and onto a cattle stop /cattle grid which I fell through up to my knees on another.
My sister loved it no matter how many bruises, I discovered other sporty pass times LOL.
This dude is definitely an attention seeker and has a real character that includes a horsey sense of humour, you could just look at his face and see him laughing inside with the twinkle in his eye…

    • Kathy,
I don’t know his name but I gave him one I thought was appropriate: Charmer !
