A Feast For The Eyes And Also The Eye Watering…

I’ve made blog posts on Delft’s Blauwe pottery in the past, but  back in 2012 my visiting Singaporean friend “Velvetine” was naturally keen to look around some of the pottery shops so we are checking out some of the best known amongst them and seeing if there are any that catch her eye to take home as gifts.

As I’ve mentioned before, there are two main types of the pottery: the transfer printed pieces that are mass produced and priced accordingly lower and the hand painted, sometimes limited edition pieces that command sometimes eyewater prices depending on the size and intricacy of the piece.

In several of the small shops we visit there are also areas where it’s possible to watch the hand painting being done, in Velvetine’s case she had to be content with just seeing the work areas becuase the painters had packed up for lunch.

She did however marvel at the many pieces on show: from the  dolls house cupboards fitted out with a full set of miniature plates, vases and servers to the large decorative tile pictures, there was plenty to see and enjoy, even if neither of us could afford the prices attached to them. Even though it was August when we visited there was a Christmas tree adorned with Delft’s bell ornaments: talk about being organised in advance for Christmas!

There was even a scale replica of the Delft Stadhuis in Delftsware, a formidable piece that is stunningly beautiful, but I asked myself  “what on earth would you do with it?” … clearly I am nowhere near the league of art collectors who have specific rooms full of cabinets to display their artworks.

It’s a hot day and these shops, in the shadow of  the New Church are another small welcome break to walking around on sticks. That said there is still plenty to see, so now we must be on the move again… and with both Velvetine and I wearing small day style backpacks, in this shop of fragiles it’s something we do very carefully indeed…
