Once Again A Toasted Sandwich Only For The Brave…

Last summer whilst on holiday in Germany we travelled to the site of an extinct volcano, but only Himself and our guest wanted to walk around it.

The rest of us ended up at the nearby “Gastwirtschaft Sünnen” restaurant in Steffln just a few kilometres down the road from the volcano site.

After a short wait a toasted sandwich lunch and a hot chocolate arrive for Little Mr, and again we are astounded at the amount of cheese on top of the toasted sandwich, it must be a regional thing here.

There is also an ice-cream sundae for Kiwi Daughter who lunched earlier but twisted my arm that she shouldn’t need to have bread for her “second lunch” if she already had it for her first.

Little Mr was promised ice-cream too after his toasted sandwich but as soon we saw the amount of cheese he was almost in tears, knowing that he would never be able to finish it.

I let him off the hook and said that if he made a good attempt at the sandwich then the ice-cream would still be on,  on the condition that he didn’t fight with his sister.

Deal done, I settled into a nice cup of tea, which turned into two because Himself and guest took longer than expected making their walk.

Once they both joined us, Little Mr had recovered enough from the cheese to order an ice-cream with his guest.

Himself ended up helping them both finish theirs though because they were more filling than they looked, but in Little Mr’s case I was hardly surprised because the hot chocolate alone was almost enough to fill him up.

The staff were friendly despite us speaking no German and they speaking no English (or maybe being unwilling to), certainly Kiwi Daughter who has had some German classes, didn’t dare open her mouth.

Maybe she wasn’t alone.

And after all that waiting then this is the only photograph that Himself  of the Volcano crater (well, what is left of it, it’s really low because you can see blue sky through the trees over the edge on the left. This is probably why it was so hard to find).
