Some Abilities Are In The DNA Of Childhood…

The next of Garderen’s Sand Sculpture pieces is called: “The best toys ever”. The information text translates as: When Rien went  as a child with his parents to Katwijk in the summer holidays, he was given some beach toys: a sieve, a spade, a few forms to shape sand with and a shrimp net. None of these toys could harm him. But what if you had an ark with animals in the small inland sea, …in the rain, or even worse? When he was small such nice toy animals did not exist.
I think that this is telling us that Riens fascination with animals,  the world around him, even with a very limited number of toys, could never dull his vivid imagination. I my experiences, especially when travelling in developing countries, is that kids don’t need a raft of electronic gadgets, they can make play things out of the most rudimentary elements where there is nothing else available. I think this ability is in the DNA of childhood.
