Standing Out From The Crowd…

The Netherlands is well known for it’s bikes.

This cycling nation has not only roughly treble the numbers of bikes per head of population it also has a steadily growing number of bakfieten too.

“Bakfiets” are sometimes called “cargo bikes” in English, they have a box-like section in the front (or sometimes the rear) that is most often used to carry children who are too young to cycle, or too young to cycle far.

Some people instantly assume that having the kids in the front is more risky because they are first in to the traffic, but that is not the case because cycle lanes separate the cars from the bikes on the vast majority of Dutch roads.

The reason that we now see more and more bakfiets is simple: they may be expensive, but they hold their value exceptionally well, making them a very practical investment.

Since quite a few Dutch people in cities do not own a car, bakfieten also come in handy for tasks such as transporting the weekly grocery shopping and the like. Of course the number of companies making bakfietsen has grown with the high demand, and when the bike parking areas are full of bakfietsen all looking a bit the same, it may make sense to have one that stands out from the crowd. I found this original one and just had to get a photograph.

There are some beautiful, weird and amazing bikes in the Netherlands… sometimes one is all three!

    • Ellen,
“bakfietsen” used to come in a few set sizes from a limited amount of brands, now the market has exploded and they come in so many different types it never ceases to amaze. I like the idea that there are more innovative and brilliant designs to come.
