There is a fairly substantial breeze on top of the Observation Deck of the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Himself and the kids leave me to catch up at the rear, sprinting ahead to make selfies with the amazing views behind them. I’m stopping to take photographs in a bit more detail and to read the information boards which give me snippets of history behind the landmarks around us.

Benjamin Shares Bridge: Opened in 1981, the Benjamin Shares Bridge is the longest and tallest bridge in Singapore, spanning 1.8 kilometres in length and 20 metres in height. Named after the second president of Singapore Dr Benjamin Henry Shares the bridge is built over reclaimed land linking East Coast Parkway on the east coast to Marina Bay on the west coast.”

Marina Barrage: the Marina Barrage is a dam in Singapore built at the confluence of five rivers across the Marina Chanel and between Marina East and Marina South. It was officially opened on 1 November as Singapore’s 15th reservoir, facilitating water storage, flood control and recreation. The Barrage is a recipient of the AAEE’s (American Academy of Environmental Engineers) Superior Achievement award in 2009.

Singapore Flyer is a giant observation wheel in Singapore that was constructed between 2005 and 2008. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in the world at a height of 165 metres, 5 metres taller than the “Star of Nanching” (China), and 30 metres taller than the “London Eye” (UK) and offers views of the city centre and beyond to about 45 kilometres including Indonesian Islands Batam and Bintam, as well as Jahor, Malaysia.

Beneath the Flyer is the Marina Bay Street Circuit, which is a street circuit around Singapore’s Marina Bay and the venue for the Singapore Night Race. The pit area of the circuit is located on an empty plot of land just beside the Singapore Flyer, with it’s route passing through some of Singapore’s most iconic spots, including the Benjamin Shears bridge, Anderson bridge, Fullerton Hotel, Merlion Park, Esplanade and Float@MarinaBay. ”
