… Want A Bag With That?

The last part of the theme  “A daytrip into the city” as part of the Garderen Sand Sculpture in 2017 is very different to the architectural sections that went before it.

This part depicts the typical stereotype of ladies shopping all day, swaths of bags bulging out from every direction.

I have to say that I have never ever shopped like this, probably the fact of working full time for most of my life had a hand in this and also, probably the not so small consideration of lack of funds.

In some ways, Yes I do have the funds, but it’s all about making choices with our money and we prefer to save and travel around the world as much as time and finances allow.

I’d rather not have wardrobes full of shoes (little use they are to me now anyway), or handbags etc.

I could of course go crazy in any shop that stocks art supplies or cooking paraphernalia, but my cooking days are limited these days because can no longer stand for long.

Himself has rather taken over the kitchen, at least for every day family meals.

What is depicted here is certainly a stereotype, the older lady stands with her wrap-a-round sunglasses face raised as if she is looking for “that fashion shop that on a corner fairly near here’.

The younger lady (or is that daughter?) looks either weary,  frustrated, or both.

You ‘see’ the feeling expressed… that her feet hurt, that she would rather be home, soaking in a bubble bath and relaxing.

In comparison. Her companion on the other hand has the expression of an explorer looking into the distance, taking measure of how far they could still go until night-fall (or in this instance, until the shops shut).

This for the lady standing is shopping like a bloodhound on the trail of a bargain. The skill of the sculptor captures the feel and texture of the bags perfectly, and the composition of this entire piece is heavenly from an artists point of view. Looking at it then and now, I have to remind myself constantly  that these bags are rendered from sand. For me it’s a horror story, for someone else it’s a treat. Just imagine how many times they have heard the phrase: Do you want a bag with that?
