No Puncturing This Number Of Bikes…

In this part of the 2017 Garderen Sand Sculpture exhibition I find an exhibit that depicts something essential to Dutch society; The bicycle repair shop. it’s often said that there are more bikes in the Netherlands than people, and it’s true. With a population of 17 million people and almost 23 million bikes, there is a massive road racing fraternity and following. Sports like BMX is huge, recreational and touring bikes take millions on day tours and camping trips both locally and abroad, and the volume of commuting public on the cycle paths in any population center has to be seen to be believed.

Visiting a train station is an eye opener too, The Hague for instance has a multi-level parking building next to the train station. This parking isn’t for cars however, it’s packed with thousand upon thousand of bicycles! The information board translates as: “Repairs”, “First to the bicycle repairer. Punctures fixed, bolts and nuts tightened and oil filter cleaned? Everything fine, so hopefully a trip without trouble.”
