There is another car park and viewing area further along the Maasvlakte dune road, and another information board, so we stop and take a look.

Up a few steps is a rectangular raised viewing platform, encased in a tall metal railing fence. The information board tells us about the view looking back towards the port.

“Here, at the very furtherest point of the Maasvlakte, you see the Slufter. This is a huge depot for the storage of contaminated dredge. It is managed jointly by the Dutch Public Works Agency and the Port of Rotterdam. The port’s docks and waterways have to bedredged to keep them deep enough for shipping. Each year the dredgers remove about 20 million cubic of dredged material from the water. that is eqal to about 25 buckets of dredge per inhabitant of the Netherlands. Some of this material is too contaminated to be returned to the sea or re-used on land. Instead it goes to the Stufter.

The depot has a capasity of 90 million cubic meters. This amount of dredge enables you to build a wall around the earth (on the equator) of 2,5 meters high and 1 meter wide. Most of the contaminated dredge is bought by ship and pumped to the depot along a pipeline. The Slufter is built by relcaiming new land from the sea, once the Slufter is full, it will be turned into a nature reserve and recreation zone. The surrounding area is already an important breeding ground and resting place for birds and accomodates a population of seals.”

You will have noticed in the photographs another sign.. “Mr Serious” … Seriously I have no clue to added this one!
