A Look In The Nook…

(photograph © Kiwidutch)

Inside the Sociëteit “De Vereeniging’s” (Private Member’s Club) grand and beautiful King’s Ballroom, there is what I will describe as a “nook”.

It’s like an alcove recessed into the wall of the ballroom, with an arched ceiling and it’s own decoration but still in keeping with the ballroom around it.

There is a fireplace on the back wall and a lectern stands facing outwards into the ballroom.

The ledger on the lectern is what I assume to be the members signing-in book, so I edited the page so that the names do not show and members’ privacy is respected.

This is obviously  now the “speakers corner”. The original purpose of this nook probably was to have had a method of heating to room with a fireplace, without said fireplace intruding directly into the ballroom (and ergo the dance floor). I assume that keeping the ballroom rectangular was better than getting the dancers tangled up in your quadrille. It’s an ingenious solution to a complex problem.
