A Gateway Into History…

The next Leiden building I am taking a look at is an older building on the corner of Oude Vest and Lange Mare. The top floor looks like a residence, the ground floor is a café.

When I took these photographs in Spring, the hospitality industry has literally just opened, under strict conditions: 1.5 metres between patrons, opening times starting from noon only, and all other precautions related to the prevention and spread of Covid19.

It was only when I was passing by here (to cross the bridge) at the end if the morning that they were setting up for the first customers and I noticed the plaque/painting illustrating the Old Mare Gate of 1615. It’s an indication that these is history deep in the veins of this area… and that is beautiful in itself too.
