Red Hot Fire Assistant…

My memory may be faulty but I am struggling to think of any time in all the time I have lived in the Netherlands that I have seen a fire hydrant like this.

Here in Leiden, I find it to be not just a functional piece of life saving equipment, but also an art piece; the small beaten up sections where it’s been clearly used, it’s weathered appearance, chipped paint and rust patches.

It’s a useful drawing example too, for it’s cylindrical form, seemingly old fashioned style, and characterful appearance. Therefore it’s going into my Reference Files for arty inspiration.  After all, who doesn’t appreciate a red hot Fire assistant?

  1. Did I tell you that my son is a voluntary fireman? Probably. Well, we’re currently looking to move house, and recently found a home which might fit the bill. I took my son for a quick look from outside and he measured out all the distances around about to the different fire hydrants. Bless.
