How To Be A SKI’er On A Motorbike…

The courtyard area of the Burg Satzvey castle in Mechernich, is not the only place that we have been seeing the bikes from the Honda Goldwing Road Riders Association.

They are gathering in ever greater numbers all inside the main entrance too.

We go to have a better look and are blown away how large the bikes are and how many variations on a theme are possible if you take one Honda Goldwing and add… stuff, in some cases even rather literally also the kitchen sink!

Soon our mouths are hanging open, these people are more than just serious about their machines.

I mull over the thought that several retirement funds are sitting here, people who have worked hard all their lives preferring to be known as “SKI’ers” (“SKI” standing for “Spending Kids Inheritance), taking off around Europe and maybe even the world on their luxurious machines and enjoying to the full every single day of their retirements. As per earlier, photographs are most welcome so I get busy, fully enjoying each new arriving vehicles and wondering what on earth can be coming around the corner next.

A Castle Courtyard Filled To Over-Flowing With Magnificent Beasts…

(photograph © Kiwidutch)

When we entered the inner courtyard of the Burg Satzvey castle in Mechernich, the first thing we saw were the imposing buildings around us.

The second thing was that the courtyard was filled with motorbikes.

It becomes apparent that this weekend the Honda Goldwing Road Riders Association (District Germany) are holding a large meeting, and that the Burg Satzvey castle is hosting them on this occasion.

The bikes are fascinating, not just because there are so many of them, but also because all are in gleaming, immaculate condition, and they are large, imposing but still beautiful machines.

All of us start looking in awe, some of the owners are around and the moment we show a polite interest in looking from a distance they come over to tell us about their machines to assure us that is fine to come closer and take any photographs we want. I didn’t waste the invitation and together we learned that the group is made up of all ages, they come from a very large area, around Germany to attend, there is even someone from the UK somewhere in the group and that a few international members travels from abroad regularly to join in with the bigger meets.

They are very quick to say that they are a “bike touring group” and not “bikers / Bikies” in the gang sense,  but that is of course obvious… clearly they have had to put people at ease on many occasions before. Himself hates the thought of motorbikes (he’s really a car enthusiast) but even he is impressed by the beauty and size of these machines. There is a brilliant sense of travelling in style when you look at these beauties.

Touring in Style and in Sheer Terror…

(photograph © Kiwidutch)

We are still at the Caves Restaurant (of yesterday’s post) just south of Kaikoura, in the South Island of New Zealand.

It’s a warm day and we’ve elected to sit at one of the tables outside in the shade of the building and therefore we can people-watch and vehicles and people come and go.

Families pile out of station-wagons, 4×4’s  or minivans piled high with camping gear, some cars are towing caravans or boats, older couples drive clean, scratch free and very tidy looking sudans, some young guys drive a hatchback that has a hatch half tied down with rope to accommodate the surfboards sticking out of the back, motorcyclists in leathers pull in…

One bike roars in with a passenger on board… as they dismount I see it’s a couple an they go inside for a meal.

The bike catches my eye… a sheepskin seat cover… and one that looks seriously comfy ! On the hot day in leathers it must also surely be about 300% more comfortable on than a sunbaked vinel seat… so Cool on so many levels!

Then a family towing a boat pull in… if you are sharp eyed you’d see the Ruldolf the Red Nosed Reindeer stuck onto the bow of the boat.

Well his head is at least… Where’s the rest of him? Ouch let’s not go there, it might be wiser not to know.

Christmas Day was just a few days ago so clearly Rudolf has skipped the North Pole and come down-under for a Summer holiday. He looks happy.

I do have an evil thought however that I’d looove to sit in the back seat of their car and take a snap out the back to see what Rudolph looks like on the front of the boat on the open road at 100 kilometres an hour.

It ain’t happening of course because it’s not our car and because this car-sick Kiwi hasn’t got a hope of looking out any back window whilst travelling at speed without turning nasty shade of stop-the-car-NOW green.

Yep, you know I have a warped sense of humour…

Fortunately I only think this about soft-toys and wouldn’t dream about it if it concerned a real animal so I don’t think that’s a criminal offence. At least I hope not.

I have however worked out that the most likely cause of Rudolph’s red nose is most probably due to his serious over-consumption of alchol because he’s scared witless about this very boat ride.
