Another archive post about our trip to southern Germany and to Legoland Deutschland.

Our accommodation was located about sixteen kilometres away from the theme park and on several occasions we decided to take a scenic route through some of the local villages to get there.

Sometimes this was planned and other times it was due to our “amazing”navigational skills, the less said about which the better.

Over the last six years my children quite often complain that I’m “taking blogging photographs again…” but on this occasion it was them and not me who not only spotted the attraction in question but also started squealing excitedly for Himself to please turn the car around so that Mama could please get out and get pictures.

I had no clue what they had seen until the car stopped and they let me out. (Looks like I have them well trained after all). They got out for a better look too, and you will quickly see why… “Quirky” doesn’t even begin to cover the decoration on this house! We all have smiles on our faces, it’s a house that is inspiring, witty and it’s all been done with great skill and an eye for design.

There is a sign hanging outside, there’s a name with a number that might be a phone number underneath,  and I’m not certain if it’s  an advertisement for a business or the name they have given to the house.

Mainly we are trying not to be too intrusive because there is nobody home and we don’t want to look like peeping toms or burglars casing the joint.

Somebody here is a serious artist and I’d hazard a guess that “maybe” their preferred  medium of choice is pencil?

I love that at the bottom of the pencils in the two gates, they have recycled the metal from old tin cans to be the metal holder of the pink “eraser” at the bottom of the pencil, it’s stunningly thought out and brilliantly put together.

It wasn’t just the window boxes and the gates that got the pencil treatment, the theme was followed through on the garden planter too. This artist clearly has an eye for detail, colour and a brilliant sense of humour… all of us in the Kiwidutch family just loves  this house!

It’s in a tiny village, (stupidly I didn’t get which one)  it’s off the main roads, it’s close to Legoland Germany, it’s full of fun and it’s a wonderful find! I dare you to smile as broadly as we did…

You know Me, anything quirky gets my attention and the quirkier the better!

Along our journey and despite the misty conditions I still manage to get some photos that make me smile, raise some eyebrows or catch my attention for one reason or another.

I smile at the tractor sign,  a 400 yard tractor dash? rogue tractors? the only space where tractors hide?

I like looking out for beautiful weathervanes, I spot two close to our destination: a ship and a cockerel.

I see a mini mural on the back of a lorry, and a wall of birdhouses on a building (it may have been a pub, I’m not sure)… and speaking of pubs, I started to realise that I had quite a few photographs of public houses!

Luckily that had nothing at all to do with always having a eye out for a drink, and everything to do with the fact that many of these buildings caught me eye because they were beautiful. There are little sign posts on rural roads : I love the little pyramids on their tops. There is also a vetenary practice that has a lovely logo… a paw print. Cats and dogs can’t read but I’m sure they recognised that one!

A Robot Communicates Quirky Artforms…

On our way home from Mechelen we come back into The Hague via the outskirting area of Leidschendam. There’s a mobile telephone and communications mast on the side of a very busy intersection that some creative people have made into it’s very own robot style artform. I like the idea that they’ve tried to make something that’s usually functional and ugly into something functional, quirky and beautiful.

You know I love quirky stuff…  I loved these letterboxes that we saw on the road between Wimbleton and Porangahau on Provincial State Highway 62…. Eclectic is the perfect word!
